It was learned from the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the Institute's Integrated Functional Thin Film Materials Research Center has successfully developed a new aluminum-graphite dual-ion battery that can greatly improve the performance of electric vehicles.

According to the research center, this new AGDIB battery uses cheap and readily available graphite to replace the high-cost and heavy metal-containing transition metal oxide or lithium iron phosphate in the traditional lithium battery as the battery cathode material; aluminum foil is used as the battery anode material and anode. Current collector; using a conventional lithium salt and a carbonate solvent as an electrolyte. The working principle of the battery is different from the traditional lithium ion battery. During the charging process, the positive electrode graphite undergoes an anion intercalation reaction, while the aluminum negative electrode undergoes an aluminum-lithium alloying reaction, and the discharge process is reversed. This new reaction mechanism not only significantly increases the operating voltage of the battery (3.8-4.6V), but also greatly reduces the quality, volume, and manufacturing cost of the battery, thereby comprehensively increasing the energy density of the entire battery.

The research center announced that it is estimated that the full cell mass energy density and volumetric energy density of this type of battery will be as high as about 222 Wh/kg. The 500Kg weight of the AGDIB battery can reach a cruising range of about 550 kilometers. Compared with the traditional lithium battery technology, this battery has obvious advantages, not only reducing the production cost by about 40-50%, but also increasing the energy density by at least 1.3-2.0 times. If this aluminum-graphite battery is successfully industrialized, it will greatly enhance the performance of existing portable electronic devices, electric vehicles, and new energy storage systems. However, the battery technology has yet to be optimized, such as the need to further improve the cycle stability of the battery.

According to reports, the results were jointly developed by Tang Yongbing and his research team members Zhang Xiaolong and Zhang Fan. The related paper "A Novel Aluminum-Graphite Dual-Ion Battery" was published online at the top of energy materials. The journal Advanced Energy Materials has applied for 2 PCT patents and 1 Chinese invention patent. The research was funded by projects such as the Guangdong Innovation Research Team, the Shenzhen Science and Technology Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation.
